Abstract Art and Kandinsky!
Oops...I guess I got a little carried away this year and just haven't updated my webpage for a long time. Right now students are learning about Wassily Kandinsky and the Elements and Principles of Art. Fourth and Fifth grade students will be taking a test over these items next week. Kandinsky used the Elements (or building blocks) of Art to create wonderful abstract art. His study of law soon gave way to his love of art and music. His later years as an artist were spent trying to capture the music he loved on canvas. Check out some of the art work our younger students created with simple tools and see what all the students are working on right now.

We have been playing catch up with some classes this week and also playing Pictionary in class. This is a great team building experience for young students. Its not about being the best artist but being able to convey a thought or idea through art. The students are having a great time playing the game and they continue to impress me with their quick thinking and artistic talents. We are soon going to jump from Prehistoric art and cave paintings into the 21st century and art using technology. In an ever growing world of technology, I feel it is important to expose students to a vast array of art mediums. We will be working with the I-pads to create art work, while learning how technology has changed art in a very small time frame.

This week we are having "Art from a cart" and by that I mean I am traveling from classroom to classroom with an Ipad cart. We are using Doodle Buddy, a free app, to create something fun. In todays world kids are surrounded by technology and this will be a field that will continue to grow in the future. It is important to let all of the kids see what this technology means for art and also helps them be more creative and have fun at the same time. Art is no longer paper and a pencil, we can show students how art has evolved and what that means for them in the future.

Right now we are discussing cave paintings and prehistoric art. Our next adventure will take us from painting with sticks and rocks to the latest and greatest in art technology. We will be jumping from one extreme to another when we start looking at digital art and using I-pads in the process. Much like flipping through an art history book we will learn about what artists have done in the past and discuss what art may hold in the future. I believe our students are standing on the front page of a brand new chapter in art history with digital technology!

"Van Gogh Vases" and "Winter Wonderland" (12-5-12)
Currently students (3-6 grades) are working on vases for our Study of Van Gogh. They are using chalk pastels, glue and paint to create a vase full of flowers. We are discussing shape, depth, space and various shading and blending techniques. We are also talking about art as a way to express emotions and tha art does not need to be "realistic" to be "good" art.
